Persephone, Goddess of The Underworld

Name: Persephone

Parents: Demeter and Zeus

Domain: Underworld/Queen of

Background:

And thee, fair maid of tender years, why doth thou dally in that field of flowers? Know you not the tale of Hades and Persephone? Know you not what happened to Demeter's daughter who sat in a field like the one you do, picking flowers and singing? No, thou sayth? Well then, sit and let me tell you of it.. for it is a tale of love, sadness and grief, yet it is a tale of uppermost importance to the mortals of this world and to the gods.

Many a year ago, back when the world was still young, the gods ruled the earth, but one god, his domain was the underworld. Hades, God and ruler supreme of the underworld. For not even Zeus would challenge him in his domain.

He lived a solitary life, for no goddess wished to share his kingdom and live in such dreary conditions, for the underworld is a dark and dismal place, one of punishment and eternal suffering, that was . if you were evil during your mortal life .. if not you went to the Elysium fields, where you lived in harmony, never remembering that you died.. a nice calm place.. but still not even the beauty of the fields could tempt the goddesses of Mount Olympus down to his realm.. unless he had a mortal they wanted to revive.

But Hades watched the upper realms carefully, for he had to, and one day he chanced to see, the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, Persephone. The young maiden Goddess was in a field picking flowers. Hades, it is said fell in love with the goddess and plotted to make her his queen. To this would lighten his palace and make the king of the dead happy. He waited until she plucked a flower from the ground and then caused a large Chasm to open at her feet. He then rode up on his chariot and stole her away.. taking her deep into the underworld, to hide her from her mother.

So there she was, captured and frightened, for who would not be? Hades' reputation was fearsome and she was terrified of what would befall her. Though she need not have worried, though she was chained and dressed in strange garments, Hades treated her with respect..

Well as much respect as he could handle at the sight of the nubile, young goddess, her hair in disarray. The chains were made by Hephaestus, the mighty smith of the gods. They could hold any god or goddess and no one could use their powers in those chains. As she stood there crying over her fate, Hades wooed her gently, and slowly. the process taking many, many months. While on the surface her mother searched relentlessly for her daughter. After a many months he released her from the chains, but kept her with him by aid of a collar that kept her from leaving the palace. By this time Demeter had discovered her daughter's whereabouts and had set forth her powers to punish the Earth.

The Gods begged her to lay her grief aside and accept the fate of her child but she refused. Eventually Zeus sent Hermes to try and reason with Hades for Persephone's release.. but by that stage the young goddess was free of the collar and when Hermes arrived she was sitting with Hades in a small sitting room, as if she had never been anywhere else or even been born in the upper world. Hermes told Hades that Persephone must be set free and Hades reluctantly agreed, though there was a catch.

He watched as Persephone was led to the door by Hermes and then mentioned the small fact. Persephone, during her time in the underworld had eaten the food of it. The pomegranate.

Persephone knew what he spoke of. For she had indeed eaten that fruit. She had eaten it while chained. Hades' smooth voice and caressing touch had driven all thoughts of her indignation from her and she had swallowed several of its seeds.. 6 to be exact.

Hermes knew the rules, but he had to discuss it with Zeus. He vanished and returned hours later with the edict. Since Persephone had swallowed 6 seeds, she would spend half her year with Hades in the underworld and the other 6 with her mother. Demeter agreed somewhat reluctantly, as did Hades. Sephie, as Hades had nicknamed her, was crushed. But to go against Zeus would cause her death, for her father was not known for liking disobeying children.

So now Persephone finds herself torn between her mother and the man she loves on a regular occasion. For when she is with her mother she is denied the chance to even speak to Hades, nor see him if he comes to visits. Though Hades has often stated that if Demeter wished to visit she may.. though she has never wanted to.

So children be where of standing to close to cliffs, and being alone in fields, for you never know when Persephone will be put aside and another taken to fill her place. the gods are fickle creatures and their desires wild and untamed.

Please note that due to a deal between the goddess of Love and the God of the underworld, Sephie has been able to spend more time with her husband as her mother is busy chasing some poor god.

Appearance: Tall and willowy with long blond hair and light green/hazel eyes. Pale skin as well.

Personality: Sephie is quiet and shy.. well that's what most think. But it is not true. She is quiet only in some aspects. She is a goddess and Queen of the underworld. She longs to be free to chose her own path, with her husband and be free of Demeter's whims. She is sick of being torn between her mother and her husband and wishes Zeus to allow her the freedom of choice. Also Persephone has a temper and it is held in check by her cool head, though woe befall anyone who tries to piss her off.

Powers: Normal Goddess powers, Power to kill a person with a kiss. Never uses it.

Favorite City: She has not favorite City though she loves spending time in the Elysium fields

Favorite Flower/Animal: The mint and Pomegranate and her favorite animal is the Nightingale
